The automotive industry is full of competitors aiming for the top. Over the years, Subaru has succeeded in becoming an iconic brand with a loyal consumer base. The Japanese automaker has earned countless awards and accolades for its Subaru Forester, Outback, and BRZ. As Subaru moves toward electric vehicles, however, it seems that the automaker is seeking collaboration with another automaker, Toyota. While both automakers have their own priorities, it seems the two have been working together to maneuver the oncoming wave of EVs. Having recently revealed its all-new all-electric 2023 Solterra, it seems that Subaru is utilizing Toyota technology to enhance its powertrain. We’ll dive deeper into this partnership and see where the two automakers plan to go from here.

Subaru Partners With Toyota For EV Production

Since 2005, Subaru and Toyota have shared a connection. With Toyota purchasing a sizable stake in the company, the two automakers have shared resources and technology. At times, Subaru has worked to produce Toyota vehicles at its own plants. Meanwhile, Toyota has helped in designing certain Subaru vehicles like the BRZ. This connection has allowed both automakers to take advantage of one another’s resources and develop iconic vehicles that consumers love.

As automakers start to take the leap into electric vehicles, many have encountered challenges. These range from low battery mileage to lackluster capability. Challenges are expected when starting any new endeavor, but some automakers have maneuvered the newfound territory better than others. In 2017, Subaru joined a Toyota-led project to develop EV technology. This seems to have paid off with the all-new 2023 Subaru Solterra. The electric SUV embodies many qualities that make Subaru special and it seems that this was achieved without sacrificing much.

The 2023 Subaru Solterra is set to start at an MSRP of $44,000 (plus destination fee). It will come equipped with a dual motor setup that will provide it with 218 horsepower and 248lb-ft of torque. Thanks to Toyota and its battery/powertrain engineering, the electric SUV will feature an estimated 220 miles of range. It’s likely that the 2023 Solterra will see an increase in its range as its release date nears. Other features expected include Subaru’s unique all-wheel drive and the Subaru EyeSight safety suite. Through its partnership with Toyota, Subaru will be able to continue to produce highly capable EVs like the Solterra.
