2022 Subaru Crosstrek vs 2022 Honda HR-V, Which Wins Out?
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover that blends aspects of a hatchback with a SUV. As with most Subaru vehicles, the 2022 Crosstrek is versatile, capable, and engaging. Subaru’s unique symmetrical all-wheel drive system gives the SUV the ability to get where the driver needs to go safely and efficiently. A similarly practical SUV is the 2022 Honda HR-V. The 2022 HR-V also comes equipped with an all-wheel drive system and it is quite efficient in terms of handling and reliability. Though it lacks some of the features of the 2022 Crosstrek, it holds up as an affordable subcompact SUV. We’ll dive in further and compare both SUVs to see which is the more practical choice.
Driving the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek comes available with either a 2.0L flat-four or a 2.5L flat-four cylinder engine. There’s also the choice of a plug-in hybrid variant for those wanting to minimize fuel consumption. The base engine can be a bit underpowered, so owners may want to opt for the higher 2.5L. Either way, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek feels comfortable and precise when driving. Subaru’s unique symmetrical all-wheel drive system makes the SUV practical in all kinds of weather. The base transmission is a 6-speed manual, but there’s the option for a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This helps improve fuel economy and pairs well with Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance suite. The Crosstrek comes with 8.7 inches of ground clearance which, in combination with Subaru’s signature X-mode, helps maneuver tough terrain like snow and mud.
Inside the 2022 Crosstrek, owners will note a spacious interior with good headroom and rear and cargo space. With the seats folded, the Crosstrek gets 55.3 cubic feet of space. The materials are high quality, and the dash is simple and uncluttered. Visibility is also good. The Crosstrek features a 8-inch touchscreen that’s compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For safety, the 2022 Crosstrek features safety and driver-assist features like blind-spot monitoring, pre-collision braking, advanced adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist.
Driving the 2022 Honda HR-V
The 2022 Honda HR-V is another practical subcompact SUV that’s relatively affordable. The 2022 HR-V comes available with a 1.8L I4 engine capable of 141 horsepower and 127lb-ft of torque. Compared to the 2022 Crosstrek, this engine pales in comparison. Where the HR-V succeeds, however, is with its fuel economy. The subcompact SUV gets 28 mph in the city and 34 on the highway, compared to the Crosstrek’s 22 mph in the city and 29 on the highway. Aside from saving on fuel, the engine doesn’t make for the most exciting driving experience. The HR-V comes standard with front-wheel drive. There’s also the option for all-wheel drive. Handling is okay, and the short wheelbase makes the crossover more agile in the city, but overall the Subaru Crosstrek makes for a more responsive and engaging driving experience.
Inside the 2022 HR-V, owners will note ample room and a good amount of cargo space. This is due to the placement of the fuel tank which lies underneath the front seats. This provides enough room for two in the back. Owners can also flip and fold the second row to accommodate extra passengers and cargo. With this addition, the 2022 HR-V gets a bit more cargo space than the 2022 Crosstrek (58.8 cubic feet versus 55.3). The HR-V features standard equipment, but it’s somewhat lackluster. Only when going up in trim levels does the HR-V get driver assist and safety features like collision-mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control, and road departure mitigation. This increase in equipment runs true for the infotainment screen as well. The base HR-V has a 5-inch touchscreen compared to the Sport trim’s 7-inch touchscreen.
The Verdict
Both the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek and 2022 Honda HR-V are good subcompact SUVs. They both offer reliability, capability, and safety, all of which ensure that drivers arrive at their destinations safely. Based on the specs and features, however, it’s clear that the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek beats out the 2022 HR-V, given their similar pricing. The 2022 Crosstrek starts at an MSRP of $22,445 (plus destination fee) while the 2022 HR-V starts at an MSRP of $21,420 (plus destination fee).
With its driver-assist and safety features, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek makes for the more practical choice. It’s more powerful engine allows drivers to traverse some of the toughest terrain all while handling well and precisely. The 2022 Honda HR-V has a bit more cargo room and its fuel economy is superb, but it only comes close to the Crosstrek the higher you go in trim levels.
