Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts several inspections to determine the safety ratings of various vehicles. Most recently the IIHS conducted a side impact test using the 2022 Subaru Outback. Among all the vehicles tested, the Outback proved to be the safest vehicle earning a top safety rating. Subaru is known for its reliable and capable vehicles. With its advanced EyeSight safety suite, Subaru has continued to outperform as one of the most popular brands. We’ll take a look at this new safety test and see how well the 2022 Subaru Outback performed compared to its competition.

2022 Subaru Outback Earns Top Safety Score

The 2022 Subaru Outback recently earned a top safety rating in an updated Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test. Established in 1959, the IIHS operates as a nonprofit organization that works to reduce the number of traffic collisions as well as the rate of injuries that occur during crashes. By testing various vehicles, the IIHS can designate a safety rating that lets consumers know which vehicles are safer than others. For Subaru, the automaker’s advanced EyeSight safety suite helps ensure that drivers and passengers remain safe wherever they go.

According to the IIHS, the 2022 Subaru Outback earned the top safety rating of ‘good’ during an updated side-impact assessment. This side impact test simulated a 4,200-pound vehicle traveling at 37 mph t-boning the Outback. These metrics were increased from previous tests as a way to further measure the safety and reliability of various vehicles. Going forward, this updated test will set the standard for future IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards. Of the seven 2022 model year vehicles that underwent this updated crash test, only the Subaru Outback earned the top safety rating.

Other vehicles that were assessed included the Hyundai Sonata, Volkswagen Jetta, Honda Accord, Chevy Malibu, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima. While these vehicles had scored a ‘good’ rating on previous safety assessments, this newly updated test saw their scores decrease. The Subaru Outback, however, continued to be a leader in safety which may have been in part to its higher ground clearance. Regardless, it’s clear that Subaru continues to produce some of the most reliable vehicles available.
