2023 Ascent & Outback Rated Most Reliable Subaru SUVs By CR

January 6th, 2023 by

The 2023 Subaru Ascent and 2023 Subaru Outback were rated the most reliable SUVs by Consumer Reports (CR). Serving as an American nonprofit organization, Consumer Reports is dedicated to product testing, investigative journalism, and consumer research. The organization conducts annual studies to determine the effectiveness of various vehicles. For its latest study, CR found the 2023 Ascent and 2023 Outback to be the most reliable and fuel-efficient vehicles within their respective categories–three-row SUVs and two-row SUVs. Subaru is known for its reliability so this news is not surprising. Although the Japanese automaker has been focused on EVs as of late, it is still giving attention to its combustion engine lineup. We’ll take a look at the 2023 Subaru Ascent and Outback and see what makes them so reliable.

2023 Subaru Ascent & 2023 Subaru Outback Score Well

The 2023 Subaru Ascent was one of two Subaru vehicles to earn a top spot in Consumer Report’s study on reliability. Operating as a nonprofit consumer research organization, Consumer Reporters helps consumers by providing them with analytical data about various vehicles. For its latest study, the organization determined that out of all its surveyed three-row SUVs, the Subaru Ascent was among the top four. The study used factors like safety, reliability, and fuel efficiency to determine the top vehicles. This was the first time the Ascent managed to make the top list in Consumer Report’s study.

The other vehicle that scored well in Consumer Report’s study was the 2023 Subaru Outback. Updated for the 2023 model year, the Outback arrives with increased capability and versatility. Out of all the vehicles studied, the two-row SUV managed to place within the top three for its reliability. The Outback features a flat-four cylinder 2.5L and a turbocharged 2.4L. The 2.5L engine delivers 182 horsepower and 176lb-ft of torque while the 2.4L offers 260 horsepower and 277lb-ft of torque. Regarding fuel economy, the 2.5L gets 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway while the 2.4L gets 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

The 2023 Ascent features a 2.4L turbocharged engine that delivers 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with Subaru’s unique all-wheel-drive system and gets 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Both the Ascent and Outback also feature Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite which includes lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, and automatic emergency braking. There’s also a monocular camera for pedestrian and bicycle alerts and a smart rearview mirror. The 2023 Subaru Ascent starts at an MSRP of $33,895 (plus destination fee) while the 2023 Subaru Outback starts at an MSRP of $28,395 (plus destination fee). Given their qualities, both are worthy of CR’s accolade for the most reliable SUV.
