Reasons to Love Outback
Advanced Capability
Find your new favorite places in a versatile, capable 2023 Outback. With standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and up to 32 MPG**, you’ll always be able to reach the next adventure. It delivers better handling, improved efficiency, and a quicker response to road conditions than competitors’ optional systems. In fact, the 2023 Subaru Outback features standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance, a combination the Honda Passport, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Edge can’t match[1].
Safe and Secure
The Outback is outfitted with a full suite of state-of-the-art technologies to keep you and your passengers safe, like standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology[2] and the available DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System[3]. These advanced active safety features have helped Subaru earn more IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards than Honda, Toyota, or Hyundai brands since 2013 as of June 2022.
Built for the Road Ahead
The time-tested durability and quality engineering of the Outback mean you can count on it mile after mile, trip after trip. In fact, 97% of Subaru Outback vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today[4], more than Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, or Hyundai Santa Fe.
Adventure looks good.
Introducing the new and upgraded 2023 Subaru Outback. With a refreshed exterior design featuring even more rugged good looks, extra safety from enhanced EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, and the convenience of available wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ – along with the all-terrain capability of its standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive – the 2023 Outback is ready to take you on your greatest adventures yet.
Outback Wilderness
The 2023 Outback Wilderness
The 2023 Outback Wilderness takes the legendary capability of the Outback farther than ever. Trail-ready upgrades let you reach the places you could only dream about, and its tough, bold style looks like nothing else on the mountain. Because it’s an Outback, you know you can trust it to get you to the end of the trail and back – over and over again.
Adventurous Capability
Engineered for real off-road fun, the 2023 Outback Wilderness delivers loads of capability upgrades inside and out. The confident traction of standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is improved even further with enhanced dual-function X-MODE. A 260-horsepower turbocharged SUBARU BOXER engine, re-tuned drivetrain gearing, increased ground clearance, and water-repellent StarTex upholstery are just the beginning of its summit-conquering features.
Rugged Styling
The Outback Wilderness pushes everything further, and that includes style. Rugged, blacked-out exterior trim and cladding protect against trail hazards as well as showcase its ready-for-anything spirit. Matte black-finish off-road wheels set the tough foundation of its practical design. Anodized Copper-finish accents and trim hide functional features like dual front and rear tow points and extend to the interior, where they highlight durable, high-quality cabin materials.
Trustworthy
The places your Outback Wilderness will take you are the places where you need equipment you can trust. Good thing 96% of Subaru vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today[20]. So no matter how far you go, you’ll always have the confidence to find a new level of adventure.
Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Capability
The standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system in the 2023 Outback is designed to optimize traction in snow, rain, on bad roads, or even when there’s no road at all. It constantly evaluates acceleration, braking, and cornering in real time to continuously deliver power to all four wheels. If a wheel slips, power is instantaneously transferred to the wheels that have the most grip.
Stability and Control
With its exceptionally balanced layout, Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive delivers a solid connection with the road and an engaged, responsive drive. The entire system lies along the centerline of the vehicle, balancing weight distribution between the two sides to help provide optimal performance and control.
Fuel Efficiency and Durability
With gas mileage up to 32 MPG** and almost 600 miles of driving range[6], the 2023 Outback is exceptionally efficient. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive has demonstrated its durability and low maintenance over four decades of owner-tested Subaru vehicles so you can be confident your Outback will keep taking you farther year after year.
Up to 9.5 Inches of Ground Clearance and X-MODE®
With up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance and standard X-MODE, the Outback can take you almost anywhere. X-MODE works by optimizing the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system for maximum traction on slippery surfaces and Hill Descent Control gives you extra stability and confidence when descending more difficult grades.

Upgraded EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology
Subaru EyeSight
The Outback features upgraded standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology for 2023, which acts like an extra set of eyes on the road and, if need be, an extra foot on the brake when you drive[2]. EyeSight includes a number of advanced active safety systems to protect you and your family on every drive. Automatic Emergency Steering, an all-new feature for the 2023 Outback, can help you avoid a collision by providing automatic steering and pre-collision braking support if it determines there’s enough space to intervene[8].
Pre-Collision Braking
Automatic Pre-Collision Braking[10] helps avoid or reduce frontal impacts by alerting you and applying full braking force in emergency situations. Pre-Collision Throttle Management can reduce the power from the engine to help minimize the possible impact force and frontal impact damage.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering[12] adds extra convenience and safety on every trip. Just choose the distance you want to keep from the car in front of you and it can take some of the stress out of everyday driving by helping with steering, braking, and throttle control while maintaining a safe distance ahead.
Subaru DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System
The 2023 Outback features a state-of-the-art system to help reduce distracted driving for both new and experienced drivers. Each day in the United States more than 1,000 people are injured in crashes reported to have involved a distracted driver[13]. Working with our award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, the DriverFocus system is like having an attentive co-pilot along for the ride, available to give a helpful alert if a driver becomes distracted or drowsy[3]. For added convenience, DriverFocus can also recognize up to five different drivers and remember their preferences, including seat position, climate settings, and outside mirror position.

With available Reverse Automatic Braking, your vehicle can even stop itself to help avoid objects behind you[15]. The amplifier works to efficiently distribute clean audio signals to the vehicle’s 12-speaker sound system – including a dedicated center channel speaker and subwoofer. Harman’s Clari-Fi™ Technology restores and corrects audio fidelity, resulting in musical reproduction that sounds clearer, crisper, and more dynamic.
