July 25th, 2024 by

Subaru of America, Inc. proudly announced the 2024 Subaru Forester’s outstanding achievement in the latest rear crash prevention test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Among the eight small SUVs evaluated, the 2024 Subaru Forester stood out as one of the four vehicles to receive a “Superior” rating, the highest possible rating from IIHS for this specific test. This exceptional recognition underscores Subaru’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing safety across its vehicle lineup.

2024 Subaru Forester Safety Features

– Recognition: Received “Superior” rating in IIHS rear crash prevention test.

– Rear Crash Prevention: IIHS introduced testing in 2018 with “Basic,” “Advanced,” and “Superior” ratings.

– Advanced Safety Features: Includes EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, Blind-Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and more.

– Capability and Comfort: Features standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Active Torque Vectoring, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

Safety at the Core

Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer of Subaru of America, Inc., expressed pride in Forester’s performance in the IIHS test, emphasizing that safety lies at the heart of every Subaru vehicle. He highlighted the integral role of Subaru vehicles not only in ensuring the safety of occupants and pedestrians but also in minimizing costly repairs for owners, demonstrating the brand’s dedication to comprehensive safety and long-term value.

Rear Crash Prevention Ratings

The IIHS introduced rear crash prevention testing in 2018 and has continually expanded its assessment criteria over the years. The rating scale encompasses “Basic,” “Advanced,” and “Superior” ratings. Vehicles equipped solely with parking sensors that issue warnings, rear cross-traffic alerts, or both receive a Basic rating. For vehicles featuring rear automatic emergency braking (AEB), their rating is determined by rigorous testing involving different approach angles and a bollard, representing real-world obstacles such as poles or garage pillars.

Comprehensive Evaluation

The comprehensive evaluation process includes 24 test runs conducted at 4 mph, with specific scenarios carrying varying weights in the assessment. The systems are scored based on their ability to either avoid the target or reduce speeds to slower than 1 mph before impact. It is essential to note that low-speed collisions while backing up, which the rear AEB system addresses, may not typically result in severe injuries but can lead to substantial financial damage. According to figures from the IIHS-affiliated Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), nearly 30 percent of collision claims in 2022 were related to rear impacts, with costs exceeding $4,000. In contrast, the optional rear AEB feature can cost as little as $600, highlighting its potential to prevent expensive damages.

Efficiency of Reverse Automatic Braking

David Aylor, Vice President of Active Safety at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, underscored the challenging nature of the rear AEB evaluation, designed to test the effectiveness of these systems in preventing common backing collisions. These scenarios present complexities wherein obstacles, such as poles or other vehicles, are positioned behind and to the side of the vehicle while the driver is reversing and, in some cases, turning simultaneously.

Advanced Safety Features of the Forester

The Subaru Forester boasts a wide array of standard and available active safety features, including the innovative EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System. Notably, the Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system is specifically designed to prevent collisions or minimize collision damage when the vehicle is in reverse. This feature utilizes sonar sensors mounted in the rear bumper cover to detect potential obstacles behind the vehicle, providing timely warnings to the driver and, if necessary, applying the vehicle’s brakes to mitigate or prevent impacts.

Unmatched Capability and Comfort

The 2024 Subaru Forester delivers an optimal combination of SUV capability and car-like ride and handling, featuring standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Active Torque Vectoring, and Vehicle Dynamics Control. The vehicle’s remarkable 8.7 inches of ground clearance (9.2 inches for Forester Wilderness) surpasses that of many SUVs while maintaining a comfortably low step-in height for both front and rear passenger entry, setting a benchmark in the compact SUV segment. The 2024 Subaru Forester is available at Subaru retailers nationwide, embodying Subaru’s dedication to providing safety, reliability, and overall driving satisfaction for its customers.
