A Look at the 2023 Subaru Rex
Subaru is bringing back a name it had previously retired. First debuting in 1972, the Subaru Rex served as a rear-wheel drive subcompact crossover SUV. Over the following years, the Rex saw updates like forward-wheel drive and a supercharged engine. Subaru eventually retired the crossover SUV in 1992. A lot has happened since then, and now it seems that Subaru is bringing the Subaru Rex back to life, this time with significant improvements. While Subaru offers highly capable SUVs like the Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback, the Rex serves a special purpose. We’ll take a closer look at the revived Subaru Rex and see what consumers can expect.
Subaru Brings Back Subaru Rex
Subaru is reviving a name it had previously retired, the Subaru Rex. The subcompact crossover SUV originally debuted in 1972. It underwent several changes and updates until it was finally retired in 1992. Now it seems Subaru is bringing it back for one more run. With dimensions 157.3-inches long, 66.7-inches wide, and 63.8-inches tall, the Subaru Rex is a reasonably small SUV. Like the Crosstrek, the Rex is meant to serve as a capable and versatile city car. The Crosstrek does offer greater capability, however. One strange feature is that the Subaru Rex offers front-wheel drive, something unheard of since Subaru released its iconic symmetrical all-wheel drive system.Â
The Subaru Rex arrives with a naturally aspirated 1.2L engine that delivers 87 horsepower and 83 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with a continuously variable transmission and, as mentioned above, front-wheel drive. Sitting at 2,200 pounds, the subcompact crossover is very light. Subaru believes the SUV will offer powerful, smooth acceleration and impressive fuel economy. The Rex will also feature several drive modes similar to Subaru’s unique X-mode.
The Subaru Rex will start at an MSRP of about $13,000 (plus destination fee). While Subaru is reviving the crossover SUV, the Japanese automaker will only produce about 150 units a month. Although it may seem the automaker is not too confident about potential sales numbers, it’s good to see Subaru continue to offer variety in its lineup. For now, we’ll wait for more information, but it seems like another crossover SUV will soon be available.Â
