Subaru has long been known for its reliable and highly capable lineup. With best-sellers like the Crosstrek and Outback, the Japanese automaker has solidified itself as a reputable brand. The latest news to hit further solidifies Subaru’s status as a top automaker. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), five of Subaru’s vehicles earned a top safety rating in its latest evaluations. The IIHS serves as an American nonprofit organization that determines the safety and reliability of various vehicles. A positive rating from the institute is a significant achievement for an automaker. As Subaru wants to have zero fatal accidents by 2030, this is a good measure of their progress. We’ll take a look at the five Subaru vehicles that earned top ratings and see how well they did.

Subaru Earns Top Safety Ratings

Five of Subaru’s vehicles earned top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). These vehicles included the 2023 Forester, 2023 Outback, 2023 Ascent, 2023 Solterra, and 2023 Legacy. All were evaluated by the IIHS, a nonprofit organization that conducts inspections and tests to determine a vehicle’s overall safety. For 2023, the IIHS raised the standards of its evaluations. These evaluations included a stricter side impact crash test, a more extensive automatic emergency braking test, and new headlight requirements. All improvements were made to place various vehicles in real-world situations.

Out of the five Subaru vehicles evaluated, the Outback, Solterra, and Ascent earned the highest safety rating, which was a Top Safety Pick+. This award is difficult to obtain as the vehicles evaluated must earn the highest Good rating in the driver and passenger-side front crash test and the side crash test. They must also earn an Acceptable or Good rating in the headlight evaluation and an Advanced or Superior rating in the front crash prevention evaluation.

The other two Subaru vehicles to receive high safety ratings were the Subaru Forester and Legacy. These vehicles earned the Top Safety Pick award, which is one step below the Top Safety Pick+ award. This does mean they are not entirely safe, however, as the only difference between the awards is that vehicles can receive an Acceptable rating in the side crash test rather than a Good rating. Based on the IIHS’s results, Subaru remains one of the safest brands with a competent and versatile lineup.
