Subaru Hints at Several New STI Performance Cars

Subaru has been making headlines with its all-new all-electric Subaru Solterra. The emission-free electric SUV has been long awaited. It is the first electric vehicle released from Subaru and it will decide the Japanese automaker’s next move within the EV sphere. Subaru isn’t only focusing on its EV production, however. The long-awaited 2022 Subaru WRX was recently unveiled causing WRX fans to rally in excitement over the next generation rally sport sedan. Subaru is following up on that enthusiasm as the automaker has teased the addition of several new STI concept cars. These are set to be revealed at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon show. For now, we’ll be looking at some teaser photos and speculating as to what Subaru could have in store for its highly anticipated 2022 WRX.

Several New WRX STI Concepts to Debut

Subaru recently announced that it will be debuting four new STI performance cars. Several of these concept cars will use the WRX namesake. Subaru will be revealing its concepts at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon show which is one of the largest annual custom car shows. Automakers gather alongside manufacturers to show off modified and tuned cars. They can display their concept vehicles and manufacturers can show off performance and custom aftermarket parts and technology. This is where Subaru will debut its STI-branded cars. This is good news for rally fans as the WRX was improved for the 2022 model year. Subaru said the next generation rally car would sport a new CVT engine that saw a significant increase in terms of enhancements so we’re excited for these new STI trims.

Subaru has described their new STI concepts as a new project that would allow them to gain more experience with new technologies in the world of motorsport. This may seem ambiguous, but given Subaru’s stance on EVs, it could be the signal that the automaker is working on either an electric or hybrid sedan, both of which would be great to see. So, the first STI concept may be a hybrid vehicle. The next concept is a WRX STI trim, as evidenced by the above image. The above WRX features an STI logo so this may be indicative of a higher performance trim for the WRX.

Two more concepts teased by Subaru were the Levorg wagon and the BRZ. Subaru does not sell the Levorg wagon in North America, but the automaker is bringing the concept to the Auto Salon show and it looks to feature STI performance parts. The next concept is the BRZ though it is not labeled as a concept. This could simply be Subaru showing off OEM accessories, but an STI trim of the BRZ would be exciting. For now, we’ll have to wait until the date of the event to see more. From what we’ve learned, however, Subaru is making sure to sustain the hype and excitement.
