Subaru Plans To Add New EVs To Its Future Lineup

Subaru is aiming to add more electric vehicles to its lineup. While many would expect the Japanese automaker to have a vast array of EVs available, only the Subaru Solterra has been released. The all-electric SUV embodies all the great qualities that Subaru fans enjoy, but overall it seems Subaru has dropped the ball on its EV development. With a reputation for being environmentally conscious and eco-friendly, Subaru wants to expand its EV lineup and add several more vehicles by 2025. One reason for the slow development may be that Subaru relies on Toyota as the two share technology. Both automakers have recently partnered to produce more EVs so that we may see an increase in EV development.

Subaru To Expand EV Lineup

Subaru is planning to expand its EV lineup. The Japanese automaker has fallen behind other automakers in its EV endeavors, but thankfully Subaru is eyeing solutions. The all-electric Subaru Solterra marks the first EV to arrive from the automaker, but Subaru wants to add several more EVs to its lineup by 2025. Subaru’s chief general manager of global planning, Tomoaki Emori, has recently stated that Subaru “needs strong hybrids and electric vehicles.” Although one of Subaru’s best-selling SUVs, the Subaru Crosstrek is offered with a hybrid setup, pure EVs are the goal.

To produce more EVs, Subaru has partnered with Toyota. The two automakers share technology and collaborate on technical development. For its first EV, the Solterra Subaru enlisted the help of Toyota, who helped manufacture the all-electric SUV. Subaru will again turn to Toyota for its future EVs and hybrids for help. Thankfully Toyota has started putting more emphasis on electric vehicles in favor of combustion engine vehicles, so we may see more EVs hit the market.

While Subaru’s all-electric SUV offers impressive capability and versatility, the Solterra provides an estimated 228 miles of range. This range can be disappointing to some, but the Solterra makes up for it with 215 horsepower and 249 lb-ft of torque. The EV SUV also offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance and several driving modes like Eco, Normal, Power, and X-Mode. Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite includes features like a 360-degree surround-view camera and a blind spot monitoring system. The Forester is the next SUV due for an overhaul, so we may see the compact SUV arrive with a hybrid system. This could resolve the low-range issue while electrifying the SUV. We do not know which direction Subaru will take, but we know consumers can expect more EVs in the future.
