Is A New Subaru Baja Hybrid Pickup In The Works?

September 8th, 2023 by

The Subaru Baja has been gone for some time now, and other companies have been reviving some of their retired vehicles. The question leads to whether Subaru will bring back their once beloved Baja. Now that the company is going towards a new era of electric vehicles, is there hope for an all-new Subaru Baja Hybrid Pickup?

Future of Subaru

The Subaru Baja model was manufactured between 2002 and 2006. This car comes in a pick-up body type and is available with petrol (gasoline) engines of 2.5L volume, which produce a power output of 165 to 210 Hp. The fuel consumption of the Subaru Baja is 10 l/100 km. The car measures 4910 x 1781 x 1590 mm in overall dimensions and weighs 1582 kg.

Now is the perfect time to introduce American customers to a compact truck from Subaru – the Baja – which comes with hybrid technology based on the company’s new hybrid model plan and all-electric powered vehicle. According to Osaki, Subaru is planning to increase its EV lineup from four models to eight, which is a significant increase from their earlier plans. Subaru aims to add four more EVs to their lineup by the end of 2028.

“As a matter of course, we have been collaborating with Toyota on BEVs for a long time. So, we will make use of that know-how in producing BEVs. We have yet to consider whether the two companies will jointly manufacture BEVs in the U.S.”  – Subaru Corporation CEO Atsushi Osaki

According to Osaki, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has been growing faster than Subaru expected, especially over the past year. He mentioned that US-based Subaru customers are environmentally conscious and are increasingly showing interest in EVs. The CEO also noted that a significant number of Subaru drivers also own Teslas. However, it’s still unclear if Subaru’s upcoming EV models will include a revived Subaru Baja compact pickup with hybrid technology or a fully electric version. Subaru has not yet announced any plans to release a new pickup, including the Baja. This is simply speculation since the Japanese automaker does not disclose any information regarding future model developments.

Subaru Baja

The 2006 Baja offers two trims- Sport and Turbo, both equipped with a 2.5-liter flat-4 engine. The Sport produces 165 horsepower, while the Turbo delivers a more thrilling ride with 210 horsepower. Both trims come with standard features such as fog lights, a sunroof, power windows and locks, ABS brakes, dual front airbags (no side airbags), roof rails, and cargo bed tie-downs. The Turbo offers additional options, such as power seats and leather upholstery. It is also possible to opt for a hardcover for the open bed, roof lights, and an extended tailgate to increase the cargo capacity. Other standard features include keyless access and an anti-theft system.

If Subaru decided to add the Baja to its new lineup towards the EVs they will be introduced by the end of 2028, it would definitely go well with consumers. We have yet to see another pickup from Subaru in a while, and having a revival of one that customers already love in an EV version will spick popularity.
